First Year Flashback

Ahhh....the early years.  For me, there's plenty of memories from 1995.  Not only did I graduate and get married within weeks of each other, but I also moved back to my hometown to begin my life-long adventure of teaching.  Welcome to my "flashback."

 1.  What subject/age and where was I teaching?
I began teaching K-5 music in the hometown where I was raised - a small town south of Dallas, TX.  Funny story...I actually replaced a high school friend's mother who had long taught music.  Talking about BIG shoes to fill.

 2.  What was my first classroom like?
Actually, the room was awesome.  It was odd shaped, but HUGE.  I remember the students sat on benches that could be moved in and out, or rearranged - about 4 kids to a bench.  They were a nightmare because the kids would wiggle, and the benches would fall over.  Now, we would call that a "safety hazard."  Hahaha.

3.  Was I given supplies and materials?
I remember having a class set of music text books and some rhythm instruments, also a CD player.  Nothing else really sticks out in my mind.  The room was pretty sparse.

 4.  What do I remember about my first day?
Other than wondering "what on earth am I going to do with these children?", I don't remember much else.  I think I lived in a fog from then on.

 5.  What was the hardest part of my first year?
Other than crying A LOT, the hardest part was jumping in and trying to figure out what I was doing without any help.  Many new teachers have the luxury of working with a co-teacher or team.  I was all alone on this journey.
 6.  What was the best part of my first year?
Truly, I think the best part was the end when I could finally look back and reflect on my survival and accomplishments.  Sometimes it's hard to see the good when you're covered in stress during the year.
 7.  What did I discover during my first year that I didn't learn in college or student teaching?
Pretty much everything.  I learned how to do fundraisers, monthly PTA programs, a large end-of-the-year school-wide program, how to plan, how to communicate with parents (BIGGIE), etc.  College is great for prepping you with knowledge of your content.  Student teaching is great for introducing you to school life, but there's nothing like figuring it out as you go.  That's real life!

 8.  From where did I draw most of my lesson plan inspiration?
With limited internet resources back then, and few tricks in my bag, most of my first year lesson plans came from the text books.  I pretty much followed it from start to finish.  Now I hardly EVER open a text book.

 9.  What is one thing I know now that I wish I knew then? (except I have more than 1 thing:)
 I wish I had known:
  • kids are forgiving and certainly won't remember if I make mistakes during my lessons
  • programs eventually come together - no matter how bad it seems the week before
  • parents want to hear the good things their children do - not just the bad
  • colleagues are willing to be supportive and helpful if they are asked
  • life would be so much easier if only I would delegate

Getting To Know You Blog Hop

Have you ever followed a blog hop? I've done several on Facebook, but haven't really been involved with blogs.   Today, I've teamed up with some fellow music bloggers to collaborate and bring you music education ideas using a variety of methodologies and approaches. However, before diving into music education topics, we thought it would be fun to organize a blog hop!

What is the benefit of going on this blog hop?

#1. Getting to Know You

  • We want a chance to get to know you! Understanding our current and past experiences helps us to form stronger professional learning communities, and we'd love for you to be a part of it!

#2. Giveaway (Now Closed.  Congrats to Lauren Danloe!)

  • After you're finished with the hop, you can enter a giveaway for your chance to WIN a basket full of goodies. Simply leave a comment on this post with an answer to the highlighted question at the bottom. Do the same at each blog hop stop. When you reach the end of the blog hop, you'll be able to enter the giveaway for your chance to win!

    All about Stacie...

Where do I hang my hat?

Over the past 20-something years, I have lived in several different locations along the southern region. Starting in the great state of TEXAS, from there I've resided in Georgia, Florida, and New Mexico.  Coming full circle, I've been back in Texas for four years, living just south of the DFW area.

    So, what makes me experienced?

My degree is a Bachelor of Music w/ K-12 certification.  Though my student teaching involved elementary, middle, and high school, I've only taught K-6.  This age group, especially the younger, falls nicely within my comfort zone since I enjoy being on the floor with the kids and making games out of lessons.  I have a school choir comprised of 4th-6th grade students who steal my heart.  A "choir class" is actually set-up within my schedule, so I see them every other day.  It's quite wonderful.   This year will be my 9th year of teaching.  Like some others, I started out teaching until children came along.  I was blessed to participate in the "stay-at-home-mom" club for 12 years.  These were the best days of my life and I was still able to be musically active through kids' choirs at church.  As my own children began school, I involved myself in subbing once or twice a week.  I enjoyed the flexibility of the job, and getting a peak into the general ed classes was fun.   When child #3 made her way to 2nd grade, I found my place, once again, in public music education.

What part of the teaching day makes me want to take my ball and run home?

For me, the hardest part of the teaching day is the class right before lunch.  First of all, I usually "eat-on-the-drive" while traveling to school early in the morning.  Having a 1:00 lunch time is not ideal as I can feel the floor dropping out from below me as my blood-sugar takes a plunge.  Sometimes I'll grab a couple of crackers or a cheese stick in between classes to stave off the hunger, but often I don't have a minute to spare.  Secondly, I teach 6th grade before lunch (ugh.)  Don't get me wrong, I love my sixth graders (on most days), but when I'm hungry and they're moody, what is already a challenging grade for me, turns into a recipe for disaster.  Often times, the students are hungry too, since we have the same lunch schedule.  The focus level and desire to participate is far less than expected when everyone is distracted by the ongoing tummy rumbles.

What is YOUR least favorite part of the teaching day?

New Beginnings!

Welcome to The Music-Go-Round!  I'm super excited to be here in the blogging world.  It will certainly be a "learn as I go" experience.  The good part of being new is, I've got plenty of examples and seasoned bloggers to model.  In addition to blogging, my Facebook page is getting up and running too.  Thanks to Dreamlike Magic for my fashionably cute template.

A little about me...I am a Christian for many years and live a life of faith and total dependence on God everyday.  I'm a wife to my best friend for 19 years.  He is a wonderful husband, great father, and just so happens to be a musician too!  I'm a mom to three - two boys and one girl.  They are my pride and joy and keep my running constantly.  I'm a Music teacher to 1st - 6th graders in Arlington, TX - a great place to work because Fine Arts is highly supported.  I love my job!

In my district, school starts back on August 18th, with the kiddos returning the following week.  I have lots of planning and room prep to do in order to ensure a smooth start to this great school year.  Come along and follow me through my journey on this "Music-Go-Round!"
